Caterpillar Q3 sales and revenues rose 17% year over year to $20.7 billion as accelerating demand for backup and prime power systems in artificial intelligence data centers boosted industrial orders. The heavy equipment manufacturer reported on October 29 that third-quarter adjusted profit reached $7.20 per share.
On a generally accepted accounting principles basis, diluted earnings reached $7.13 per share, up sharply from $4.88 per share in the third quarter of 2025. Adjusted profit per share of $7.20 also beat the $4.95 recorded a year earlier as price realization and volume growth lifted profitability.
Consolidated operating profit margin expanded to 20.4% during the July-through-September quarter, compared with 17.3% in the prior-year period. Executives covering industrial business trends pointed to disciplined cost control and a record order backlog across core machinery divisions.
Power Generation Surges on Data Center Buildouts
The standout performer in the third quarter was the Power Generation subsegment, where revenue jumped 30% to $3.42 billion. That increase was driven primarily by deliveries of large reciprocating engines, gas turbines, and turbine-related engineering services for hyperscale data center operators.
Cloud computing providers have accelerated orders for on-site multi-megawatt generators to secure uninterrupted electricity amid regional utility grid bottlenecks. Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Joe Creed noted that third-quarter results demonstrated the durability of end markets alongside strong order rates and a record backlog.
Construction Industries and Energy and Transportation both benefited from North American infrastructure projects and energy pipeline maintenance. Dealer inventories remained balanced heading into the fourth quarter, supporting steady factory production schedules through year-end.

Tariff Recoveries and Manufacturing Cost Pressures
Trade policy played a direct role in the quarterly financial statement. Third-quarter operating profit included $128 million in tariff recoveries linked to the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, partially cushioning input cost inflation elsewhere in the supply chain.
Within the Resource Industries division, unfavorable manufacturing costs primarily reflected elevated raw material prices and component import tariffs. Management listed potential new trade duties and adjustments to existing tariff schedules among the principal risks that could affect upcoming quarterly margins.
Mining customers continued to invest in autonomous haulage fleets and heavy earthmoving equipment, though higher steel and logistics expenses weighed on segment margins. Engineers are expanding remanufacturing programs to help fleet operators extend machine lifecycles while managing capital budgets.
With data center construction showing no sign of slowing into early 2027, power generation equipment is positioned to account for a growing share of total company revenue. Maintaining margin expansion will depend on navigating trade policy shifts while executing deliveries from the record equipment backlog.
Backlog Execution and Global Infrastructure Demand
Beyond hyperscale data center power installations, civil construction and energy infrastructure spending across North America and the Middle East continues to underpin multi-quarter equipment orders. Independent dealer networks reported healthy rental fleet utilization and steady aftermarket parts demand during the July-through-September period.
Operating cash flow strength has allowed management to maintain research investments in hybrid-electric earthmoving machinery, hydrogen-ready turbines, and autonomous mining site controls. As utility providers and cloud operators lock in multi-year turbine and engine delivery slots, the company’s record order backlog provides substantial revenue visibility well into fiscal 2027.
Field service technicians and regional distribution centers also contributed higher recurring maintenance revenue as contractors maximized utilization of existing heavy machinery fleets. Multi-year energy transition projects continue to support turbine order visibility.
