Apple Posts Record $114.5B Q4 as Memory Costs Rise

· · 3 min read

Apple Q4 revenue rose 12% year over year to a September-quarter record of $114.5 billion, driven by $57.58 billion in iPhone sales and 14% earnings-per-share growth to $2.10. Despite the top-line beat, shares slipped 1.90% to $331.90 on November 3 after December-quarter gross margin guidance trailed expectations.

Trading volume reached 63.2 million shares on Tuesday, nearly 60% above the 30-day average, leaving the Cupertino technology giant with a market capitalization of $4.82 trillion. The stock’s pullback contrasted with a 0.83% gain in the Nasdaq Composite and a 0.36% rise in the S&P 500.

For the fiscal fourth quarter ended September 26, company-wide gross margin reached 47.9%, which included a favorable impact of roughly 1 percentage point from tariff refunds. Investors following technology business results focused heavily on component cost inflation heading into the holiday shopping period.

Unprecedented Memory Pricing Squeezes Holiday Outlook

For the December quarter, management projected total revenue growth between 7% and 10% alongside gross margin guidance of 45% to 46%. That margin range fell just short of consensus Wall Street expectations near 46.3%, prompting cautious trading after the release.

Chief Executive Officer John Ternus described current semiconductor memory pricing as unprecedented and warned that memory purchase costs are expected to keep rising beyond the December quarter. Tight DRAM and NAND supply is also projected to constrain Mac and iPad production availability during the holiday period.

Chief Financial Officer Kevan Parekh attributed the bulk of the sequential gross margin contraction to elevated memory chip prices, alongside higher cloud computing expenses supporting Siri artificial intelligence features and hardware revenue deferrals.

Regional Sales Mix and Shareholder Dividends

While flagship iPhone revenue of $57.58 billion beat analyst projections of $56.48 billion, performance across geographic regions and software segments showed mixed trends. Revenue in Greater China came in at $17.54 billion, trailing consensus estimates of $18.75 billion amid intense local smartphone competition.

In the high-margin Services division, management guided December-quarter revenue growth to a range of 8% to 9%, slightly below market expectations of 10.7%. Even so, the company achieved all-time September-quarter records for total revenue, net income, and diluted earnings per share.

The board of directors declared a quarterly cash dividend of $0.27 per share, payable on November 16, 2026, to shareholders of record as of November 12. Robust free cash flow continues to fund both quarterly dividends and ongoing share repurchase programs.

Navigating component cost inflation while scaling on-device and cloud-based artificial intelligence tools will define the company’s early fiscal 2027 trajectory. Strong consumer upgrade demand for the latest iPhone lineup provides a solid revenue cushion as supply chain teams manage memory chip constraints.

On-Device AI Integration and Supply Chain Management

Hardware engineering teams are increasingly designing custom silicon with higher unified memory bandwidth to run generative artificial intelligence models directly on smartphones, tablets, and laptops. While those higher-capacity DRAM configurations enhance user privacy and reduce cloud latency, they also increase sensitivity to global semiconductor memory spot prices.

With an installed base surpassing two billion active devices worldwide, recurring digital subscriptions across cloud storage, app distribution, and financial services continue to buffer cyclical hardware cost swings. Investors will closely watch December-quarter holiday sell-through and early 2027 memory contract negotiations for signs of gross margin stabilization.
