Microsoft Stock Rises 2.7% as AI Cloud Backlog Hits $677B

· · 3 min read

Microsoft AI cloud growth helped lift shares of the Redmond software leader by 2.74% to close at $520.99 on November 3, outpacing the broader technology sector rebound. The rally followed fiscal first-quarter disclosures showing a 48% surge in Azure revenue and a $677 billion commercial performance backlog.

The $13.87 daily gain pushed the company’s market capitalization to $3.87 trillion, leaving the stock just 5.47% below its 52-week high of $551.15. Across the wider market, the Nasdaq Composite rose 0.83% to 25,372.01 while the 10-year U.S. Treasury yield settled at 4.95%.

Fellow cloud and semiconductor companies joined Tuesday’s advance after Oracle priced a $20 billion stock and bond offering, with CoreWeave climbing 7.16%, Oracle gaining 5.85%, and Nvidia adding 2.29%. Analysts monitoring enterprise business software noted that multicloud database partnerships continue to expand workloads running inside Azure.

Azure Expansion and Record Commercial Bookings

In its fiscal 2027 first-quarter report released on October 28, the company posted total revenue of $92.3 billion, an increase of 19% year over year. Microsoft Cloud revenue climbed 30% to reach $63.9 billion, anchored by 48% growth in Azure and other cloud infrastructure services.

Commercial remaining performance obligation—a key measure of contracted future revenue—jumped 73% year over year to $677 billion. Corporate clients are signing longer-term multi-year agreements to secure cloud computing capacity and deploy generative artificial intelligence copilots across workplace productivity suites.

By spreading artificial intelligence monetization across enterprise operating systems, developer tools, cybersecurity platforms, and cloud hosting, the company has maintained diversified revenue streams. High renewal rates among Fortune 500 customers continue to underpin predictable cash flow generation.

Capital Expenditure Scale and Valuation Scrutiny

Supporting that $677 billion backlog requires unprecedented capital investment in global data centers, custom silicon, and high-voltage power interconnects. Additions to property and equipment reached $39.4 billion in the fiscal first quarter alone as construction accelerated across North America, Europe, and Asia.

The scale of capital spending across megacap technology firms has sparked debate among institutional investors regarding near-term depreciation expenses and return on invested capital. Some market strategists have also examined whether shifting federal and state regulatory policies after the November midterm elections could affect domestic data center permitting.

Other institutional analysts counter that enterprise demand for cloud migration and automated software workflows remains structurally supply-constrained rather than demand-constrained. Every new gigawatt of data center capacity brought online is quickly absorbed by commercial cloud tenants.

Trading at $520.99 per share, the software giant remains nearly 50% above its 52-week low of $349.20. Converting its $677 billion contracted backlog into recognized cloud revenue while managing quarterly capital intensity will remain the central focus for shareholders heading into 2027.

Enterprise Copilot Deployment and Multicloud Partnerships

Corporate technology officers are moving generative artificial intelligence projects from pilot testing into full departmental rollouts across finance, legal, customer service, and software development teams. Integrating conversational assistants directly into everyday spreadsheet, document, and communication workflows has strengthened seat-expansion renewal rates across commercial licensing tiers.

At the infrastructure layer, multicloud interconnects that allow enterprise customers to run mission-critical relational databases seamlessly inside Azure data centers have accelerated workload migrations. Balancing $39.4 billion in quarterly capital additions against 30% Microsoft Cloud revenue growth remains the defining equation for the company’s $3.87 trillion valuation.
