Tesla Shanghai October Shipments Dip 28.9% to 67,829 EVs

· · 3 min read

Tesla shipped 67,829 electric vehicles from its Shanghai Gigafactory in October 2026, marking a 28.88% decline from September’s peak and its second-lowest monthly output of the year. Despite the sharp sequential pullback, October wholesale volume exceeded the October 2025 total by 10.30%, pushing cumulative ten-month deliveries to 810,889 units.

Model 3 and Model Y vehicles built at Tesla’s Shanghai factory reached 810,889 wholesale units in the first ten months of 2026 despite a sequential dip in October.

Preliminary data released on November 3, 2026, by the China Passenger Car Association shows that the automaker’s year-to-date wholesale volume rose 21.42% compared to the first ten months of 2025. October’s shipment count of 67,829 Model 3 and Model Y vehicles beat October 2025 by 6,332 units, extending the factory’s streak of year-over-year gains to 12 consecutive months. However, the figure trailed September’s year-to-date high of 95,366 units by 27,537 vehicles and sat above only February’s Lunar New Year trough of 58,599 units.

Export Hub Dynamics and Global Market Pressures

Wholesale figures from the Shanghai facility combine domestic retail deliveries within China and vehicle batches exported to overseas markets, including Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada. While the preliminary October release did not separate domestic sales from exports, nine-month data through September highlights the factory’s growing reliance on international buyers. Between January and September 2026, domestic Chinese deliveries fell 11.93% year-over-year to 381,088 vehicles, whereas exports surged 108.44% to 361,972 units.

Overseas shipments accounted for 48.71% of the Shanghai plant’s wholesale output during the first three quarters of 2026, up sharply from 28.64% a year earlier. In the third quarter alone, the facility’s 275,111 wholesale vehicles represented 57% of the 486,532 cars the automaker delivered worldwide. Because export vessels load in large batches, monthly wholesale totals frequently fluctuate between high-volume loading months like September and lighter shipping months like October.

Export momentum faces emerging regulatory and trade headwinds across key international destinations in the global Business landscape. In Canada, the automaker paused orders in October for its Shanghai-built Model 3 Premium, priced from C$39,490, until March 2027 after exhausting its allocation under Ottawa’s import quota. Meanwhile, Chinese tax authorities announced that the value-added tax export rebate on new energy vehicles will drop from 13% to 9% on April 1, 2027, a policy shift expected to add roughly $600 million in annual export costs at current volumes.

Fierce Domestic Rivalry and Financing Incentives

The sequential contraction at the Shanghai plant contrasted starkly with China’s broader passenger new energy vehicle market, which expanded 8% from September and 12% year-over-year to reach roughly 1.8 million wholesale units in October. Ranked eighth by monthly wholesale volume in China, the American automaker trailed domestic leader BYD at 483,125 vehicles, Geely at 213,165 units, Leapmotor at 106,127 units, and SAIC-GM-Wuling at 97,241 units. Rapidly expanding technology challengers XPeng and Xiaomi also surpassed 50,000 monthly deliveries in October as Chinese rivals aggressively launched new models across Europe, Australia, and Asia.

Competing with a concentrated two-model lineup of the Model 3 sedan and Model Y crossover—including the six-seat Model Y L variant sold in China—leaves the Shanghai plant sensitive to aggressive pricing and rapid product cycles from domestic manufacturers. Chinese passenger electric vehicle demand also faced headwinds throughout 2026 after Beijing halved the national purchase tax exemption on January 1. To stimulate fourth-quarter domestic orders without cutting sticker prices, the company introduced a promotional financing plan on October 30 running through November 30 that halves minimum down payments and trims final payments by 10,000 yuan on the Model 3 and 4,000 yuan on the Model Y.
