Tom Cruise to Receive 2027 AFI Life Achievement Award

· · 3 min read

The American Film Institute has announced that veteran actor and producer Tom Cruise will be honored with the 2027 AFI Life Achievement Award for his four-decade contribution to cinema. The milestone tribute will take place during a black-tie gala ceremony at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on April 24.

Kathleen Kennedy, chair of the AFI Board of Trustees, praised Cruise as a global cinematic icon whose dedication to theatrical filmmaking has united audiences worldwide. She highlighted his work as both a leading actor and a hands-on producer committed to the communal big-screen experience.

With the selection, Cruise joins a roster of past AFI honorees that includes several of his most famous career collaborators. Previous recipients include his A Few Good Men co-star Jack Nicholson, his Rain Man co-star Dustin Hoffman, and The Outsiders director Francis Ford Coppola.

Four Decades of Box Office Hits and Stunt Innovation

Cruise began his film career with supporting parts in the early 1980s before joining Coppola’s ensemble in the 1983 drama The Outsiders and breaking out later that year in Risky Business. In 1986, his portrayal of naval aviator Pete Mitchell in Top Gun established him as Hollywood’s premier action star.

Over the ensuing decades, he headlined and produced the global Mission: Impossible franchise, performing his own high-altitude and high-speed stunts through the seventh and eighth installments. His 2022 sequel Top Gun: Maverick became one of the highest-grossing theatrical releases in history and earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Picture.

Box office and film industry reports in Entertainment note that Cruise currently stars in the theatrical release Digger, portraying a powerful global figure.

AFI Gala Follows Recent Honorary Academy Award

Alongside his commercial blockbusters, Cruise earned three acting Academy Award nominations for his dramatic performances in Born on the Fourth of July, Jerry Maguire, and Magnolia. His 1988 drama Rain Man, opposite Hoffman, won the Academy Award for Best Picture.

In 2025, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences presented him with an Honorary Oscar at the Governors Awards in recognition of his advocacy for theatrical exhibition and stunt performers.

April Ceremony Supports Film Preservation Initiatives

Established by the AFI Board of Trustees in 1973, the Life Achievement Award is presented annually to a single individual whose work has fundamentally advanced the art of motion pictures. Proceeds from the April gala support the institute’s film preservation and educational programs across the United States.

Generations of directors, co-stars, and studio executives are expected to gather at the Dolby Theatre on April 24 to celebrate Cruise’s filmography. Broadcast and streaming details for the tribute special will be announced by the American Film Institute early next year.

Film historians credit Cruise’s insistence on practical stunt work, IMAX camera photography, and exclusive theatrical windows with helping revitalize global cinema attendance earlier this decade. Studio executives across Hollywood have frequently echoed Kathleen Kennedy’s assessment of the actor as a tireless ambassador for movie theaters.

When the 2027 AFI Life Achievement Award gala convenes at the Dolby Theatre on April 24, the tribute will span more than 45 years of American moviemaking. Tickets and sponsorship packages for the benefit dinner are managed through the American Film Institute in Los Angeles.
