Joel and Ethan Coen Reunite for Netflix’s Jack of Spades

· · 3 min read

Oscar-winning filmmakers Joel and Ethan Coen have officially reunited on a feature project for the first time since 2018, co-writing the gothic mystery Jack of Spades for director Joel Coen, with Netflix scheduling a theatrical release in fall 2027 ahead of streaming.

Dramatic mountain valleys and rugged terrain in the Scottish Highlands under cloudy skies
The rugged landscape of the Scottish Highlands serves as the 1880s setting for the upcoming gothic mystery Jack of Spades.

The streaming giant confirmed the acquisition on Monday, positioning the period thriller as a major awards-season contender following an anticipated film festival debut next autumn. An early cut of the movie reportedly ran nearly 150 minutes when it was first shopped to distributors in August, generating immediate excitement among cinephiles eager to see the brothers collaborate again.

The project marks the siblings’ first shared screenplay credit since their Western anthology The Ballad of Buster Scruggs debuted eight years ago, which also premiered through Netflix and earned three Academy Award nominations. During their time working independently, Joel helmed the stark 2021 Shakespeare adaptation The Tragedy of Macbeth, while Ethan directed the comedy features Drive-Away Dolls in 2024 and Honey, Don’t in 2025.

Over four decades of filmmaking, the duo built an acclaimed catalog including Fargo, The Big Lebowski, No Country for Old Men, True Grit, and Inside Llewyn Davis. Their temporary creative separation had left film critics and audiences wondering whether the four-time Oscar winners would ever share a writing or directing credit on a narrative feature again.

An 1880s Gothic Mystery in the Highlands

Set in the Scottish Highlands during the 1880s, Jack of Spades adapts Frances Frederica Montrésor’s 1901 novel The Alien: A Story of Middle Age. Booker Prize-winning novelist Eleanor Catton and acclaimed playwright Conor McPherson share screenwriting credit alongside the Coen brothers on the literary adaptation.

The ensemble cast is led by Patsy Ferran, Josh O’Connor, Damian Lewis, and Lesley Manville, bringing together some of Britain’s most respected stage and screen performers. Behind the camera, the production reunites several longtime collaborators, including producer Frances McDormand, cinematographer Bruno Delbonnel, and veteran film composer Carter Burwell.

Delbonnel previously earned Academy Award nominations for his striking visual work on the brothers’ earlier features, including Inside Llewyn Davis, The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, and The Tragedy of Macbeth. Meanwhile, Burwell has scored nearly every Coen brothers feature since their 1984 neo-noir debut Blood Simple, ensuring that the upcoming period piece retains their unmistakable atmospheric signature.

A Long-Awaited Creative Reunion

Hints of a joint return surfaced last month when the brothers appeared together for a career retrospective at the Lumière Film Festival in Lyon, France. Speaking to attendees there, Ethan noted that the pair had written numerous unproduced scripts over the decades and intended to make another movie together in the near future.

For followers of cinema and Entertainment news, the pairing of the Coens’ sharp narrative instincts with an atmospheric 19th-century Scottish Highlands setting promises a memorable return to form for the acclaimed filmmaking duo. With a theatrical window locked in for fall 2027 ahead of its global streaming premiere on Netflix, Jack of Spades is already shaping up as one of the most anticipated releases on the horizon for 2028 awards consideration.
