Luka Doncic Powers High-Speed Lakers Offense With 87 Points

· · 3 min read

The high-powered Luka Doncic Lakers offense has opened the 2026-27 NBA regular season at a blistering pace as the Slovenian superstar strings together historic scoring nights. Across back-to-back victories over the Toronto Raptors and Miami Heat, the ninth-year guard poured in 87 points in just 71 minutes of court time.

A Relentless String of 40-Point Performances

Doncic entered Sunday’s matchup against Toronto already leading the NBA in scoring at 36.2 points per game, and he has only elevated his efficiency over the past week. Prior to the back-to-back set, the five-time All-NBA selection strung together dominant offensive outings of 52 points against the Utah Jazz, 41 points against the Portland Trail Blazers, and 37 points against the Golden State Warriors.

He followed that three-game run with a 45-point, 15-rebound masterclass in Sunday’s victory over the Raptors before immediately dropping 42 points on Monday night to defeat the Miami Heat. Across those two games in 24 hours, Doncic connected on 26 of his 47 field-goal attempts and drained 14 three-pointers while dictating every half-court possession.

Head coach JJ Redick marveled at the shot-making command of his lead guard, comparing Doncic’s scoring outbursts to a supernova that has somehow started to feel like a normal nightly routine. Redick noted that when Doncic is on the floor, the team lives on a spaceship moving at the speed of light at all times.

Pick-Your-Poison Playmaking and Floor Spacing

What makes Los Angeles so difficult to defend during this early-season surge is the way Doncic manipulates defensive coverages above the three-point arc. Because he can knock down step-back jumpers from 30 feet or bully smaller guards in the post, opposing coaches are forced to send early double-teams and blitzes to get the ball out of his hands.

As Redick pointed out, the moment an opponent commits two defenders to the ball, every other player on the floor becomes the immediate beneficiary. Doncic’s pinpoint skip passes and pocket feeds consistently generate wide-open corner threes and uncontested rim runs for his teammates in four-on-three situations.

Even in his ninth professional campaign, the 27-year-old guard continues to refine his half-court pacing, using subtle hesitations, shoulder fakes, and eye manipulation to freeze help defenders before firing cross-court lasers to shooters waiting in rhythm along the three-point perimeter.

Two-Way Leadership and Defensive Containment

While his offensive fireworks naturally dominate the highlight reels, the coaching staff has been equally impressed by Doncic’s commitment on the defensive end of the floor this autumn. Redick praised his guard’s on-ball containment through the opening stretch of games, highlighting his active hands for steals, willingness to sacrifice his body for charges, and constant vocal communication with interior defenders.

Pulling down 15 defensive rebounds against Toronto also allowed Los Angeles to ignite fast-break opportunities immediately without waiting for an outlet pass. By pairing league-leading scoring volume with improved defensive rebounding, mature locker-room chemistry, and vocal leadership on both ends of the court, Doncic has positioned himself firmly at the front of the early Most Valuable Player conversation this November.
